A taste of Greece returns to Earl Mountbatten Hospice

Earl Mountbatten Hospice is delighted to once again be hosting a celebration of Greek music and cuisine next month.

On Friday 19 January 2018, the hospice hosts a Greek Night with a piano performance by Costas Panayotidis, who studied piano for 12 years when he attended the renowned Athenaeum music school in Athens. In his professional life, Mr Panayotidis is a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist who leads early pregnancy and fertility services at St Mary’s Hospital.

The concert, which will include music from as early as 1930 right up until more modern music from the end of the century, will be a unique opportunity to listen to Greek music written or transcribed for piano. It will feature songs that are recognised around the world, but also those with a hint of nostalgia and reflections of the grander periods of Greek history. From Yanides to Chatzidakis, from Plessas and Theodorakis, the music will feature some of the composers who changed the history of music. Traditional tunes or dances and even Bouzouki music transcribed for piano will be included in the program.

A buffet of Greek food will also be on offer, as well as a selection of accompanying drinks. Tickets are just £10 and can be bought on the door. The night starts at 7 for 7:30pm, in the John Cheverton Centre.

Meanwhile, the first concert of the New Year takes place on Thursday 4 January 2018.

The Outfit are described as a professional function band featuring stylistic jazz piano and soulful female vocals, and they will perform from 7:30pm in the John Cheverton Centre. Our established series of concerts to suit all musical tastes feature the talents of professional musicians from the Isle of Wight and beyond. Held every first Thursday of the month, admission is £10 and includes canapes and wine.
