We are seeking a group of Volunteer Rehabilitation Assistants to join our small and friendly Allied Health Professions (AHP) team, and to be part of providing palliative rehabilitation and enablement for people admitted to the Mountbatten Inpatient Unit.

You will volunteer alongside our Occupational Therapist and Physiotherapists, to enable patients and their families to work towards things that matter to them, such as living as independently as possible, improving quality of life, or achieving something very meaningful to the person.

You may be involved in:

  • Supporting patients to practise doing things that will help them to be more independent when they return home, such as walking, getting up from a chair or bed, washing and dressing, or preparing drinks/ food
  • Supporting patients to practise doing an activity that matters to them
  • Supporting patients to carry out exercises prescribed by physiotherapists
  • Visiting patients at home after discharge from the Mountbatten Inpatient Unit to provide continuing rehabilitation and support at home
  • Supporting the work of the AHP Team in other ways, including administration tasks

You will be supported to develop the necessary skills and competencies through bespoke training, alongside the standard volunteer training. You will work jointly with other members of the AHP team when necessary, and at other times you will be supported to work independently to carry out the rehabilitation and enablement plan developed by our Occupational Therapist and Physiotherapists.

Previous experience of working or volunteering in a health or social care environment is an advantage. You will need to:

  • Be compassionate
  • Have excellent communication skills
  • Be able to cope with some level of physical demand to carry out the role
  • Be able to follow policies and procedures, and maintain patient confidentiality
  • Have emotional resilience
  • Have a desire to make a difference to people who are approaching the end of their life
