Racing Rules

The competition will be raced in yachts of the Seaview Mermaid Class, chartered from the Sea View Yacht Club. The event will be governed by the Racing Rules of Sailing, the prescriptions of the Royal Yachting Association, the Sea View Yacht Club Standing Sailing Instructions and the Sea View Mermaid Class Rules, except as any are changed by this Notice of Race and any supplemental Sailing Instructions. Where there is conflict, the Sailing Instructions shall prevail.

Conditions of Entry

The captain of each team is responsible for the safety of all members of his/ her team, whether afloat or ashore and nothing, whether in the Notice of Race or Sailing Instructions or anywhere else, reduces this responsibility. It is for the helm / Skipper of the boat to decide whether the boat is fit to sail in the conditions in which he or she will find themselves. By going to sea, the helm / Skipper of the boat confirms that it is fit for those conditions and that its crew is competent to sail and compete in them.

Eligible competitors will be selected by Mountbatten. Each crew will consist of at least three and not more than four members. Helms / Skippers must be registered donors to Mountbatten who have completed a Regatta Entry Form and are at least competent dinghy sailors.

Scoring and System Prizes

The Low Point system prescribed in Appendix A of the Racing Rules of Sailing will apply. Prizes will be offered to the winning teams in each final category.

Mermaid Allocation

A Seaview Mermaid will be allocated to each team for each race and these may change if a team have a gap between races. The results of these draws will be posted on the official SVYC noticeboard no later than 45 minutes prior to the Warning Signal for the first race in each series.

Clothing and Safety Equipment

Racing Rules of Sailing 40.1 (each competitor shall wear a personal flotation device) applies at all times whilst afloat. Buoyancy Aids are supplied for every sailor and must be worn, unless you are wearing your own personal flotation device. Each team will be responsible for the provision of any additional required safety equipment and appropriate footwear and foul weather clothing.

Damage or loss of Equipment

Competitors must report any damage or loss of equipment, however slight, to the coxswain of the SVYC Nanny Boat or RIB and on the relevant Declaration Form immediately after each series of races.

It should be noted that in the event of serious damage to a Mermaid an Insurance Excess of up to £900 will be payable by the participating organisation and that all competitors, in accordance with Rule 14, will be expected to use their best endeavours to avoid any contact with another boat.

Entry to the competition should be confirmed before the 0900 briefing.

Accommodation and Transport

Each team will be responsible for arranging its accommodation and transport requirements. Wightlink Car Ferries run from Portsmouth to Fishbourne and Passenger Ferries run from both Portsmouth and Southsea to Ryde. Car ferry bookings should be made as soon as possible. It is also recommended that you check the passenger service timetable prior to travelling by telephoning Wightlink on 0871 3761000 or Hovertravel on 0239 2281 1000. Passengers using the Hovertravel or Wightlink services to Ryde can pre- book taxis from Ryde to Seaview by calling Ryde Taxis on 01983 811111.
