Every day, our staff see first hand how the money you raise helps Island people through the toughest of times. Mountbatten Nurse, Vicky, knows what it means to both receive and provide care and is part of Team Mountbatten taking part in Walk the Wight on Sunday 12 May. Here, Vicky shares her story...

‘To be honest I have lost count how many times I have walked the Wight but I guess my first was when I first started as a student nurse at Mountbatten back in 2006. I have missed a couple of years along the way, once as it fell on my daughter’s birthday and the other to go on a spa break, so very valid reasons I feel!

Over the years I have done a variety of full walks and halves. Two consecutive years I ran the two separate halves. All great fun in their own way.... except the year of the torrential rain! The last two years we have walked in memory of my mum, dad and mother in law. Dad and Maureen were cared for in Mountbatten Hospice and my mum was looked after at home by the community team. A surreal experience being on the 'other side', but with friends and colleagues caring for our loved ones we knew they couldn't have been in better hands and this gave us immense comfort.

So now we walk with them in our hearts as we stride out to raise money for the amazing organisation Mountbatten is; raising vital funds so they can carry on supporting the island community. This year it’s going to be a team event. I manage the Care at Home Team and so I am in the process of getting as many of the team on board to walk together, with our families.’

Join Vicky and Team Mountbatten for Walk the Wight 2019. Together we can help ensure no-one is left to die alone or without care on the Isle of Wight.
